Johnnies Suffer Road Loss at Saint Mary's

Box Score

WINONA, Minn. – Saint John's soccer suffered a 1-0 loss at Saint Mary's on Saturday, Sept. 17, in Winona.

James Larson's second goal of the season proved to be the game-winner for SMU (4-3-0, 1-1-0 MIAC) only 5:58 into the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) made five saves in the loss, the first of his collegiate career, for SJU (1-2-3, 0-1-1 MIAC). The Johnnies out-shot the Cardinals by an 8-6 margin on goal, including three each from senior Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) and junior Daniel Bruckbauer (Fargo, N.D./Shanley).

The loss was the first SJU against Saint Mary's since 2009 (1-0 in double-overtime at home) and the first in Winona this century (1-0 on Oct. 16, 1999).

The Johnnies return home to host Simpson (Iowa) for a non-conference match at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Haws Field.
