Despite Early Red Card, SJU Plays Wartburg to 2-2 Tie

WAVERLY, Iowa – Saint John's soccer and Wartburg played to a 2-2, double-overtime tie on Saturday, Sept. 10, in Waverly, Iowa.

SJU (1-1-1 overall) played the final 91:47 of the match down a man after senior Jose Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) was called for a red card in the 19th minute.

Paris Martins gave the Knights (2-1-1 overall) a 1-0 lead with 2:06 left in the first half.

Junior Daniel Bruckbauer (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) tied the match 3:09 into the second half, with assists going to senior Dylan Lehrer (Prior Lake, Minn.) and sophomore Uriel Cordoba (Medford, Ore./South Medford).

Freshman Ben Becker (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) gave the visitors a 2-1 lead with his first collegiate goal in the 62nd minute, with an assist going to senior Ryley Sullivan (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Gonzaga Prep, Wash.).

Andrew Bell scored what proved to be the game-tying goal on a penalty shot with 11:41 left in regulation.

The Johnnies travel east to face Luther for a 2 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 11, on the campus of Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. The match was moved from Decorah due to flooding in the area.
