Late-Inning Rallies Propel SJU to Sweep at Augsburg

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's baseball used a pair of late-inning rallies to earn a doubleheader sweep, 8-4 and 9-8, at Augsburg on Saturday, April 23, at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis.

The Johnnies (22-9, 10-4 MIAC) held Augsburg's offense, which entered the day batting .324 with an average of 8.7 runs per game, in check for most of the day. The Auggies (16-16, 6-8 MIAC) batted .300 (18-for-60), including a 3-for-17 (.176) showing with two outs, and four doubles on the day.

Freshman outfielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) went 5-for-7 with two walks, two RBI and three runs scored in the sweep.

Sophomore Nick Noack (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) struck out two and earned the save in both wins with a combined three innings of hitless relief.

SJU manufactured single runs in the first and second innings of game one before the home team scored three runs with two outs to gain a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

The visitors broke through with five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior outfielder Mike Stegora (Red Wing, Minn.) started the rally with an RBI double before freshman outfielder Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple. Freshman second baseman Cole Weaver (Carlsbad, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) brought in Jackson in the next at-bat for the fifth run.

Senior outfielder Dan Keller (Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake) added an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh. SJU's Nos. 5-9 in the lineup contributed all three extra-base hits and had two hits apiece in the victory.

Sophomore Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) earned the win, allowing the four runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings of work.

Like game one, SJU gained the upper hand in the nightcap, though the gap seemed much greater. The Johnnies jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings, only to lose it (7-6) thanks to a five-run sixth inning by the Auggies.

Stegora gave SJU an 8-7 lead with his second home run of the season in the seventh inning and junior third baseman Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) added another run with an RBI double.

The Auggies tallied a single run in the eighth, but Noack recorded a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the win and the sweep for SJU.

Freshman Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits in 2.2 innings of relief.

Freshman Cameron Jurek (Foley, Minn.) started the game and went five innings. He allowed six runs on 10 hits, though the Auggies were held to only three hits through the first four frames.

SJU, which has now won each of the last nine meetings overall and 12 of the last 13,  batted .356 (26-for-73) on the day and left 19 men on base.

The Johnnies return home to host nationally-ranked St. Thomas for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, April 26, at Saint John's Field in Collegeville.
