COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's baseball rode the momentum of a walk-off win in game one to fuel an offensive outburst in the nightcap for a doubleheader sweep of Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, April 16, at Saint John's Field in Collegeville.
The Johnnies (18-8, 6-3 MIAC) came back from two, two-run deficits in game one and won the game 7-6 thanks to a two-out, three-run homer from senior first baseman
Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview). SJU then scored seven runs in the first two innings and cracked 20 hits in game two's 16-3 victory.
SJU's top four hitters in the lineup combined to go 26-for-36 (.722) with six doubles, two triples, two home runs, 16 RBI and 16 runs scored on the day.
Strey went 8-for-9 with two home runs, two doubles and eight RBI. He is batting .600 (12-for-20) with three homers, two doubles and 12 RBI over his last five games.
Junior third baseman
Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) batted .700 (7-for-10), including a 4-for-5 performance in game one, to become the 27th Johnnie to reach 100 career hits.
Freshman second baseman
Cole Weaver (Carlsbad, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) totaled six hits in nine at-bats, four of which were for extra bases (three doubles and a triple), while senior shortstop
Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) went 5-for-8.
Gustavus (9-13, 2-6 MIAC) tallied a run in the top of the seventh inning of game one to gain a 4-2 lead. Freshman outfielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) cut it to 4-3 with his first collegiate home run, a solo shot with one out, in the bottom half of the inning. Weaver followed with a triple and Schiebel tied the game with an RBI single in the next at-bat.
The Gusties' No. 9 batter, Cody Christensen, gave GAC another two-run lead with a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning. The extra-base hit was his second of the season.
Schiebel and Hershey registered back-to-back singles with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before Strey launched a 1-0 pitch deep over the left-field fence.
Freshman
Cameron Jurek (Foley, Minn.) made the start in game one and allowed the six runs on 13 hits, seven of which were groundballs, in 8.2 innings for the no-decision. He struck out four and walked two. Senior
Marcus Barone (Eden Prairie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) registered a strikeout to end the top half of the ninth inning and earned the win in relief to improve to 4-0 on the year.
The Johnnies tallied two or more runs in five separate innings to post the route in game two, which was plenty enough for junior
Alex Kendall (St. Cloud, Minn./Saint John's Prep). Kendall allowed one run on six hits in five innings of work to earn the win and improve to 4-2 on the hill. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Sophomore
Ted Christian (Le Center, Minn./Tri-City United) and junior
Sam Ferguson (Arcadia, Wis.) each allowed a run in an inning of relief.
SJU batted .459 (34-for-74), including .538 (21-for-39) with runners on base, with 16 extra-base hits (to the Gusties' four) on the afternoon.
The Johnnies return to Northfield on Sunday, April 17, to finish game two of the doubleheader against Carleton that was previously suspended on April 6. SJU and the Knights were tied at a score of 3-3 before play was halted due to darkness.
