Strong Defense Powers SJU to MIAC-Opening Win

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's basketball displayed a stingy defense to win its conference opener, 62-45, over Carleton on Saturday, Dec. 3, at Sexton Arena.

The Johnnies (5-1, 1-0 MIAC) held Carleton (2-3, 0-2 MIAC) to a .333 shooting percentage (17-for-51), posted a 24-8 scoring advantage in the paint and out-rebounded the Knights by a 35-28 margin. CAR entered the game shooting 47.5 percent from the field and averaging 38 boards per game.

SJU scored the final seven points of the first half, including a three-pointer off the glass from junior guard Patrick Strom (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) at the horn, to take a 31-22 lead into the break.

The two teams exchanged a pair of buckets before the Johnnies went on a 10-2 run to build a double-digit lead that never dipped below 10 points the rest of the way.

Junior post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) led the home team with 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Freshman wing Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) followed with 11 points off the bench and Strom added 10.

Mitchell Biewen led the Knights with 14 points, thanks to a 4-for-6 performance from three-point range. Kevin Grow, the reigning MIAC Athlete of the Week, scored eight points on 4-for-10 shooting and grabbed five rebounds.

The Johnnies travel to face Augsburg, which defeated No. 12 St. Thomas (76-70) on Saturday, for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis.
