Another Hot Second Half Propels SJU to 91-74 Win at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's basketball shot 63.6 percent (14-for-22) from the field in the second half in a 91-74 win at Augsburg on Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Minneapolis.

SJU (6-1, 2-0 MIAC) ended the first half with a 7-0 run to take a 40-36 lead into intermission. Aided by a pair of free throws and makes on their first four shots attempts, the Johnnies opened the second stanza with a 12-4 run to build a 52-40 lead and led by as much as 21 (77-56) in the second half.

The Johnnies are shooting 58 percent (112-for-193) from the floor in the second half of their games this season and have won each of the last seven meetings with Augsburg.

Junior post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) led the Johnnies with 24 points, on 11 of 14 shooting, and grabbed six rebounds.

Sophomore guard David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) filled the stat sheet with 22 points, on six of eight shooting (4-for-5 from three-point range), a career-high eight assists and seven rebounds.

Freshman wing Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) added 13 points off the bench and junior guard Patrick Strom (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) totaled 10 points. Junior guard Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) collected six points and six assists.

Collin Olmscheid led the Auggies (4-4, 2-1 MIAC) with 25 points, on nine of 21 shooting (1-for-7 from three-point range), and added nine boards. Chuckie Smith, the reigning MIAC Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week and a transfer from Division II St. Cloud State, added 15 points on four of 10 shooting and committed three turnovers.

SJU out-rebounded the home team 36-24 and recorded 20 assists on 28 made field goals.

The Johnnies travel to face No. 21 St. Thomas (4-3, 1-2 MIAC), which dropped a 74-61 decision at home to Hamline Wednesday night, for a 3 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Dec. 10, in St. Paul.
