Another Third Period Tilts SJU's Way in 3-1 Win Over Gustavus

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's scored three unanswered goals, including two in the third period, in a 3-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus on Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

The Johnnies currently lead the MIAC with 21 third-period goals in 11 games this season. SJU led the MIAC (all games) in both third-period goals (39) and third-period scoring differential (+18) in 2015-16.

Sophomore forward Robb Stautz (Roseville, Minn.) broke a 1-1 tie with what proved to be the game-winning goal, his third tally of the season, on the power play 59 seconds into the third period for SJU (6-4-1, 3-2-0 MIAC). Junior forward Sam Valerius (Maple Grove, Minn.) and sophomore forward Matt Colford (Champlin, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play. Valerius has eight points (5g/3a) during a current five-game point streak.

Senior captain Dan McNamara (Grand Rapids, Mich.) added an insurance goal at the 10:28 mark of the third with helpers from senior defenseman Daniel Tripicchio (Hudson, Wis.) and junior forward Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany).

Following a scoreless first period, Russell Barone gave GAC (1-7-1, 0-5-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead off a deflection 7:38 into the second.

Sekesi tied the game for SJU with 4:13 remaining in the second period. Tripicchio and junior forward Zach Glienke (Eagan, Minn.) collected the assists on the goal, Sekesi's third of the season. The game was Tripicchio's first since he suffered a concussion Oct. 30 at the season-opening MIAC Showcase.

Freshman goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 18 saves to win his second consecutive game and improve to 3-2-0 on the year.

SJU out-shot the Gusties 38-19 and went 1-for-4 on the man advantage.

The Johnnies travel to face Gustavus for a 7:05 p.m. game on Saturday, Dec. 3, in St. Peter.
