Johnnies Host Division II St. Cloud State Tonight

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (2-0 overall) tied a school record with 17 three-pointers in a 94-88 non-conference win over Minnesota-Morris on Saturday (Nov. 19) in Collegeville. The Johnnies shot 52.3 percent (34-for-65) from the field for the game, including 55.9 percent (19-for-34) in the second half, and made 17 of its 37 shots from behind the arc (45.9 percent). The 17 treys tied the school record set in the 85-64 win at Macalester on Jan. 23, 2013.

Sophomore guard David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) led SJU for the second consecutive game with 20 points. He shot seven of 10 from the floor, including a 6-for-9 showing from three-point range. Freshman wing Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) made his presence known in the home opener with a career-high 19 points and five rebounds off the bench. Junior guard Patrick Strom (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) match Stokman's six three-pointers and finished with 18 points and five boards. Junior post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) tallied 13 points, six rebounds and five assists in 26 minutes. Junior guard Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) collected eight points, six assists and five rebounds.

The Johnnies were whistled for 19 fouls to Morris' 12 and committed 15 turnovers on the afternoon. UMM, however, only turned the 15 miscues into 11 points. SJU, meanwhile, turned the Cougars' six turnovers into 14 points. The home team also posted statistical advantages on the glass (40-30), in the paint (28-14), second-chance points (24-22) and bench points (29-5).

HOT START: Stokman shot 70.8 percent from the field (17-for-24), including 71.4 percent (10-for-14) from three-point range, and averaged 25.5 points and four rebounds per game as SJU started its season with a 2-0 record last week. Aside from his performance against Morris, Stokman went 10 of 14 from the field (4-for-5 from three-point) and posted career highs in points (31) and rebounds (8) in SJU's 89-79 season-opening win at UW-Superior Nov. 15. He led SJU with a .447 shooting percentage (34-for-76) from three-point range as a freshman last season.

A LOOK AT THE HUSKIES: St. Cloud State (2-4 overall) dropped its first four games of the 2016-17 season but has bounced back with two straight home wins over Pittsburg State (Kan.) and Waldorf (Iowa) on Nov. 12 (91-68) and Nov. 18 (86-64), respectively. The Huskies were ranked No. 10 in The Sporting News' preseason top 25 poll and were picked to finish second in the North division, and third overall, in the North Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) preseason coaches' poll. Sophomore guard Gage Davis was named the NSIC North's Preseason Player of the Year. He averaged 19.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, and 50.9 percent from the field en route to All-NSIC first-team honors and the league's Freshman of the Year award. Davis currently leads SCSU in scoring (20.3 ppg.) and rebounding (6.7 rpg.), while shooting 52.8 percent from the floor this season. Senior guard Scottie Stone, a fellow All-NSIC first-team selection last season, is second with 15.8 points per game and a team-leading 18 three-pointers. SCSU has four Division I transfers on its 2016-17 roster: Davis (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, IPFW); Kurt Hall (Toledo); Mark Hall (Illinois State); and Alex O'Neill (Creighton).

LAST YEAR: SJU gave Pat McKenzie '04 a win in his head-coaching debut, 83-80 over St. Cloud State last Nov. 20 (2015) in Halenbeck Hall. The Johnnies shot 66.7 percent (18-for-27) in the second half, 58.6 percent (34-for-58) for the game, and out-scored SCSU 48-18 in the paint. SJU posted a 17-4 scoring advantage off turnovers, which were 10-5 in favor of the Huskies. Alex Schmitt '16 led SJU with 26 points on 11 of 15 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 4-for-4 night from behind the arc. He was 5-for-5 (2-for-2 from three-point range) in the second half alone. Joe Risinger '16 followed with 16 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Mitchell Kuck '16 chipped in 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Weiss added 14 points of his own, all of which were scored in the second half. Kuck hit a half-court shot at the horn to cut the Johnnies' deficit to 41-38 at the break. SCSU led by seven, 74-67, with 4:27 remaining, but SJU went on a 16-4 run, aided by two consecutive baskets from Schmitt in the final minute. Stone led the Huskies with 24 points, including 19 in the first half, and Mark Hall added 21.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 23-27 against SCSU since the 1964-65 season, including a 14-9 record in Collegeville. Last year's win, coupled with 2014's 73-70 victory in Collegeville, gave SJU its first back-to-back wins in the series since 1983. The last time the Johnnies won three consecutive games in the series occurred during the six-game win streak from 1978-81.
