Missed Opportunities Lead to Loss for SJU Soccer

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer found itself on the losing end of a 3-1 decision to Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 8, in Collegeville.

The Johnnies (3-5-3, 2-2-1 MIAC) totaled large statistical advantages in shots (23-7), shots on goal (11-4) and corner kicks (11-1) in the loss. SJU was also called for offsides twice in the match, in which one negated a Johnnie goal with 12:12 left in the first half.

The win was the first for Bethel in Collegeville in nearly 17 years (1-0 on Oct. 12, 1999).

BU (7-5-1, 2-3-1 MIAC) gained a quick 1-0 lead on an own goal 3:19 into the match when a throw-in deflected off an SJU defender to the back of the net.

The Royals made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute when another deflection off a throw-in bounced right to a sprinting Danny Jaderholm on the right side of the box. J.T. Thweatt extended the lead to 3-0 in the 70th minute.

Senior Dylan Lehrer (Prior Lake, Minn.) put SJU on the scoreboard with 13 minutes remaining. Senior Jose Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) sent a free kick from midfield to Lehrer, who deflected the service via his right leg in mid-air. The goal was Lehrer's fourth of the season.

BU's Sam Asfahl made 10 saves, including a miraculous stop on a one-timer off the foot of junior Daniel Bruckbauer (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) in the first half and another on a bending shot to the far post from senior Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) late in the contest.

The Johnnies travel south to face Gustavus Adolphus for a 4 p.m. match this Wednesday, Oct. 12, in St. Peter.
