Late Goals Spoil SJU's Upset Bid at Loras

Box Score

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Loras scored two goals in the final 13 minutes of the match in a 4-3 win over Saint John's on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Dubuque, Iowa.

Ryan Ross tied it at 3-3 in the 78th minute for Loras (5-3, 1-0 IIAC) and Liam O'Connell scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute.

Loras received votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) top 25 poll released Sept. 27 and were ranked fifth in the NSCAA North Region poll posted the same day. The Duhawks made their 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs and advanced to the national championship game last season.

Senior Dylan Lehrer (Prior Lake, Minn.) gave SJU (3-4-3, 2-1-1 MIAC) a 1-0 lead on a header to the far post off a throw-in from sophomore Rene Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) in the 31st minute. The goal was Lehrer's third of the season and seventh of his career.

Alex Herrera tied the match at 1-1 for Loras with 1:50 left in the first half.

Kyler Olson gave the home team a 2-1 lead 1:52 into the second half, but senior Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) answered only 36 seconds later to tie it at 2-2. Seniors Jose Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) and Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) assisted on the tally, which was Newman's second of the season and eighth of his career.

The Johnnies gained a 3-2 lead with an own-goal, a deflection off a throw-in, in the 54th minute.

SJU is the first team to score three goals or more against Loras in the Rock Bowl since Nov. 12, 2011 (4-0 win for Calvin in the second round of the NCAA tournament). The Johnnies and Duhawks played to a scoreless tie last fall in Dubuque.

Freshman Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) made five saves in the loss.

The Johnnies return home to host Bethel for a 3:30 p.m. match next Saturday, Oct. 8, at Haws Field in Collegeville.
