Newman! Missourian Nets Game-Winner in Overtime, 2-1

Box Score

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Saint John's junior forward Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) tallied the game-winning goal 4:02 into overtime to give the Johnnies a 2-1 win over Carroll on Sunday, Sept. 6, in Waukesha, Wis.

The goal was Newman's first of the season and served as his first game-winner since the 2013 season opener. Freshman defender Rene Cabrera (Medford, Ore./South Medford) serviced a throw-in to senior midfielder Alex Niederloh (Maple Grove, Minn.), who chipped a quick pass to an open Newman in front of the net.

Junior forward Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) gave SJU (2-1 overall) an early 1-0 lead with a blast from 30 yards out 20:10 into the match. Junior defender Ryley Sullivan (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Gonzaga Prep, Wash.) posted the assist.

Caden Pruitt tied the match for the Pioneers (1-2 overall) on a free kick straight on net, from just outside the box, in the 72nd minute (71:12).

Senior Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made three saves to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Twenty-four Johnnies played in the match, which consisted of everyone dressed aside from backup goalkeeper Conor Failor (Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels).

The Johnnies leave Minnesota behind again next weekend with two matches in Iowa, beginning with a 7:30 p.m. contest at No. 11 Loras on Saturday, Sept. 12, in Dubuque. SJU ends the trip with a 3 p.m. game at Simpson on Sunday, Sept. 13, in Indianola.
