Wageman Wins It for SJU in the 89th Minute, 1-0 Over Luther

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's senior Paul Wageman (Roseville, Minn./DeLaSalle) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season with 1:16 remaining in the match to give the Johnnies a 1-0 non-conference win over Luther (Iowa) on Sunday, Sept. 20, in Collegeville.

A deflected clearance, following an SJU (6-1-1, 2-0-0 MIAC) throw-in, found its way to junior Nick Van Marter (Portland, Ore./Cleveland), who then sent a shot along the grass toward the net. Wageman, however, cut through the box and chipped it past the keeper for the game-winning goal.

Senior Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made three saves to record his second shutout of the season and 13th of his career.

The 6-1-1 start to the season is SJU's best since 2006, a season in which SJU won a share of the MIAC regular-season title (13-4-1 overall, 9-1-0 MIAC).

SJU was ranked fifth in the first National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) North Region rankings of the 2015 season released Sept. 16. Luther was ranked ninth.

The Johnnies return to conference play with a 1 p.m. match at Carleton on Saturday, Sept. 26, in Northfield.
