Johnnies Win Season Opener in Double Overtime, 2-1

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The combination of seniors Robert Deetz (Owatonna, Minn.) and Paul Wageman (Roseville, Minn./DeLaSalle) propelled Saint John's to a 2-1 double-overtime win over Minnesota-Morris in the 2015 soccer opener on Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Collegeville.

Wageman tied the match at 1-1 with his second career goal in the 77th minute (76:53), with assists going to Deetz and junior defender Dylan Lehrer (Prior Lake, Minn.).

Deetz net the game-winner 48 seconds into the second overtime in front of a raucous student section on the high wall of Haws Field. Senior defender Ryley Sullivan (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Gonzaga Prep, Wash.) played a long ball to the foot of Wageman on the right side of the box, who then chipped a pass through the box to an open Deetz on the far post.

Devin White gave Morris a 1-0 lead on a rare goal, the Cougars' first shot on net, 14:59 into the second half. White intercepted the clearance from senior goalkeeper Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's), raced the netminder to the deflected ball and tapped it into the net.

SJU out-shot UMM 26-6 in the game (11-2 on goal) and registered a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior midfielder Alex Niederloh (Maple Grove, Minn.) rattled a shot off the crossbar 11:11 into the game and junior forward Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) was denied by UMM's Cody Christ on two point-blank shots in front of the net.

The Johnnies continue non-conference play with two games against 2014 national-tournament teams in Wisconsin this weekend. SJU visits the Milwaukee School of Engineering for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 5, followed by a 1 p.m. contest at Carroll on Sunday, Sept. 6.
