Johnnies Blank Hamline, Earn Weekend Split

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's hockey bounced back from Friday's 6-5 loss with a 2-0 shutout of Hamline to earn a weekend split on Saturday, Feb. 7, in St. Paul.

Following a scoreless first period, in which the Johnnies (10-6-5, 6-4-2 MIAC) out-shot the Pipers 20-10, freshman defenseman J.D. Cotroneo (Woodbury, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with 11:04 left in the second period. Sophomore forward Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) and senior forward Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) tallied the assists on the goal, Cotroneo's second in as many games.

The Johnnies looked to have scored on a 5-on-3 power play, on a blast from senior defenseman Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.), but the goal was waved off for a man in the crease.

Senior forward Nick Vatnsdal (Independence, Minn.) put the game away with an empty-net goal, unassisted, with 1:02 remaining.

Junior goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 32 saves to record his third shutout of the season and seventh of his career.

SJU out-shot Hamline (9-8-4, 5-4-3 MIAC) 41-32, 86-68 on the weekend, and went 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Johnnies return to the Twin Cities for a 7 p.m. game at Bethel on Friday, Feb. 13, at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.
