Johnnies Post Rare Shutout at Gustavus, 3-0

Box Score

ST. PETER, Minn. – Saint John's hockey won its third consecutive conference game with a 3-0 shutout at Gustavus Adolphus on Friday, Dec. 4, in St. Peter.

Senior goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 22 saves to record his first shutout of the season and eighth of his career. The Johnnies' shutout was their first of the Gusties since Adam Hanna made 10 saves in the 7-0 win, nearly 11 years to the date (Dec. 4, 2004) in St. Peter.

Sophomore forward Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal, on a rebound of freshman Joe Chitwood's (Carmel, Ind.) shot, 5:51 into the second period for SJU (3-6-2, 3-2-0 MIAC). The goal was his fourth of the season and team-leading ninth point.

Sophomore forward Tyler Dunagan (Maple Grove, Minn.), who tallied the second assist on Sekesi's goal, made it 2-0 with his third goal of the season less than seven minutes later. Senior captain Andrew Commers (Edina, Minn.) and freshman forward Matt Colford (Champlin, Minn.) added the assists.

Commers added an insurance goal, his second of the season, with 5:16 remaining. Sekesi and senior defenseman Joe Freemark (Lakeville, Minn.) tallied the assists.

Gustavus (2-5-2, 1-4-0 MIAC) out-shot the Johnnies 22-17 and went 0-for-6 on the power play.

The Johnnies return home for the series finale at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
