SJU Settles for Weekend Split With Overtime Loss

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Gustavus Adolphus scored the game-winning goal with 1:40 remaining in overtime to defeat Saint John's 2-1 on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.

Gustavus (3-5-2, 2-4-0 MIAC) lit the lamp first when a shot from Will Holtan near the blue line glanced off the top of senior goaltender Saxton Soley's (Elk Mound, Wis.) glove, off his shoulder and to the back of the net with 20 seconds left in the first period.

Sophomore forward Tyler Dunagan (Maple Grove, Minn.) tied it for SJU (3-7-2, 3-3-0 MIAC) with his second goal in as many days, on the power play, 7:26 into the second period. Junior forward Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) and sophomore forward Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) supplied the assists.

Alex Koopmeiners, a graduate of St. Cloud Cathedral and transfer from Concordia-Moorhead, shot a rebound from the slot over Soley's right shoulder for the game-winning goal at the 3:20 mark of overtime.

SJU out-shot the Gusties 31-27, including a 27-18 margin after the first period. Soley made 25 saves in the loss.

The win was just the fourth for GAC in its last 25 games against SJU at the HBNHC (18-4-3 record in favor of SJU).

The Johnnies return to non-conference play with a 7 p.m. puck drop against St. Scholastica next Saturday, Dec. 12, at the HBNHC.
