Box ScoreST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey dropped its MIAC opener by a 3-1 score to Concordia-Moorhead on Friday, Nov. 6, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
The win was the first for Concordia in St. Cloud since 2002, snapping a 15-game winless streak (0-14-1 record).
Freshman defenseman
Sean Lang (Apple Valley, Minn.) put SJU (0-2-1, 0-1-0 MIAC) on the scoreboard first, 1:45 into the game, on a shot from center ice that snuck between the Concordia goaltender and the near post for his first collegiate goal.
Concordia (2-1, 1-0 MIAC) tied the game on a goal from Mario Bianchi at the 15:07 mark of the first period and gained the lead on a power-play tally from Bryan Kronberger with 1:55 remaining.
Jake Zeleznikar padded the Cobbers' lead on an empty-net goal with 1:10 left in the game.
Senior goaltender
Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 40 saves in the loss for SJU, which was out-shot 43-34 in the game, including a 16-5 margin on the power play.
The Johnnies and Cobbers wrap up the weekend series with a 2 p.m. puck drop on Saturday, Nov. 7, which will also serve as Youth Hockey Day. Any child that wears his or her youth hockey jersey, or a shirt recognizing his or her elementary school (i.e. Kennedy Community School) will gain free admittance to the game.
