Box ScoreST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 2 Wisconsin-Stevens Point edged Saint John's hockey by a 3-2 score on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.
Freshman
Garrett Riebling (Chanhassen, Minn.) gave SJU (0-4-2, 0-2-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead 10:22 into the game. He unleashed a wrister from just inside the blue line, on a feed from classmate
Connor Thie (Minnetonka, Minn.). The points were the first of their respective collegiate careers.
UWSP (6-0-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) stormed back, however, with a pair of goals 44 seconds apart to gain a 2-1 lead after one.
Freshman
Sean Lang (Apple Valley, Minn.) tied the game seconds after a 4-on-4 ended 1:08 into the third period. Senior
Neal Smith (Rogers, Minn.) and junior
Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) were credited with the assists.
Eliot Grauer's second goal of the game proved to be the game-winner, on a breakaway, with 8:02 remaining.
Senior
Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 29 saves in the loss as the Pointers out-shot the home team 32-30, though the Johnnies held a 23-15 advantage after the first period.
SJU did not have a power play the entire game, while UWSP went 1-for-3 on the man advantage.
The Johnnies return to conference play and end their five-game homestand with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Hamline on Thursday, Nov. 19, at the HBNHC.
