A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (0-3-1 overall, 0-2-0 MIAC) enters this weekend following a pair of close losses to Concordia-Moorhead in the MIAC-opening series Nov. 6-7 in St. Cloud. The Johnnies dropped the conference opener by a 3-1 score, thanks to an empty-netter, Friday night. The win was the first for Concordia in St. Cloud since 2002, snapping a 15-game winless streak (0-14-1 record). Freshman defenseman
Sean Lang (Apple Valley, Minn.) put SJU on the scoreboard first, 1:45 into the game, on a shot from center ice that snuck between the Concordia goaltender and the near post for his first collegiate goal. Concordia tied the game on a goal at the 15:07 mark of the first period and gained the lead on a power-play tally with 1:55 remaining. Senior goaltender
Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 40 saves in the loss for SJU, which was out-shot 43-34 in the game, including a 16-5 margin on the power play.
SJU suffered a 3-2 loss Saturday afternoon despite out-shooting the Cobbers 38-28 in the game, including a 31-16 margin after a scoreless first period. Senior captain
Andrew Commers (Edina, Minn.) and junior forward
Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) each scored a goal for SJU.
A LOOK AT THE BLUGOLDS: Seventh-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire (3-0-1 overall) stayed unbeaten following a 3-3 tie against Saint Mary's and a 3-2 win over Augsburg last weekend. Junior forward Adam Knochenmus and junior defenseman Preston Hodge are tied for the team-lead with four goals and are also first and second, respectively, with seven and six points. Classmates Garret Clemment and David Henry, are close behind with three goals apiece. Junior Jay Deo and senior Tyler Green have combined for a 1.71 GAA and a .940 save percentage in net so far this season.
LAST YEAR: SJU and then-No. 10 Eau Claire skated to a 3-3 tie last season in St. Cloud. Each of the three goals came from returning players this year: seniors
Neal Smith (Rogers, Minn.) and
Tyson Fulton (Champlin, Minn.), and sophomore
Tyler Dunagan (Maple Grove, Minn.). Soley made 23 saves as the Johnnies out-shot the Blugolds by a 33-26 margin.
SERIES HISTORY: The Blugolds have seemed to have SJU's number lately in hockey. Since the 1999-00 season, the Johnnies have a 4-9-1 record in the series.
A LOOK AT THE POINTERS: Second-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point (4-0-0 overall) went 2-0 against MIAC opponent at home last weekend, drubbing Gustavus Adolphus 5-1 before edging Bethel 4-3 in overtime. The Pointers visit Concordia-Moorhead Friday before stopping in St. Cloud Saturday. UWSP has lost the national-championship game each of the past two seasons. Senior forward Joe Kalisz leads the way in points (8) and goals (4). Last season, Kalisz posted a team-leading 32 points (18g/14a). He is one of seven experienced skaters for UWSP. The Pointers are young in net, however, with freshman Jesse Gordichuk and sophomore Max Milosek splitting time so far this season. The duo is not as stingy as Eau Claire's, touting a 1.96 GAA and a .913 save percentage.
THE LAST MEETING: UWSP won the last meeting by a 4-2 score on Jan. 8, 2011, in Stevens Point. Mike Wallgren '11 and Conor Rooney '12 scored the goals for the Johnnies, while goaltender Tony Civello '12 collected 39 saves in the loss.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 5-6-1 against Stevens Point since 1998-99, but hold a 3-2 mark when the game is played on their home ice.
