Neal Smith (Rogers, Minn.) tied the game at 4-4 for SJU with 5:09 remaining, his second goal of the game.
The Johnnies built a 3-1 first-period lead, but St. Thomas (1-0-1 overall) scored three consecutive goals to gain a 4-3 lead.
Junior forward
Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) had a goal and two assists, while sophomore forward
Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) tallied a power-play goal, SJU's first tally of the season 6:02 in, and an assist.
Senior
Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 35 saves as SJU was out-shot 39-28 in the tie.
The Johnnies face Augsburg (0-1 overall) for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game on Sunday, Nov. 1, in Blaine.
