Johnnies Open Hockey Season With 4-4 Tie vs. No. 14/15 St. Thomas

BLAINE, Minn. – Saint John's hockey and No. 14/15 St. Thomas played to a 4-4 non-conference tie as part of the MIAC Showcase on Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.

Senior defenseman Tyson Fulton (Champlin, Minn.) gave SJU (0-0-1 overall) a 2-1 win in the eighth round of the practice shootout.

Senior forward Neal Smith (Rogers, Minn.) tied the game at 4-4 for SJU with 5:09 remaining, his second goal of the game.

The Johnnies built a 3-1 first-period lead, but St. Thomas (1-0-1 overall) scored three consecutive goals to gain a 4-3 lead.

Junior forward Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) had a goal and two assists, while sophomore forward Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) tallied a power-play goal, SJU's first tally of the season 6:02 in, and an assist. 

Senior Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 35 saves as SJU was out-shot 39-28 in the tie.

The Johnnies face Augsburg (0-1 overall) for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game on Sunday, Nov. 1, in Blaine.
