No. 17 Macalester Edges SJU Soccer, 2-1

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision at No. 17 Macalester in a battle for first place in the conference standings on a rainy Tuesday night, Oct. 27, in St. Paul.

SJU (11-3-2, 6-2-1 MIAC) dominated in shots, 14-6 (8-3 on goal), and plays host to St. Olaf (10-6-1, 6-2-1 MIAC) in the regular-season finale at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Haws Field. The winner will claim second place in the conference standings and earn the No. 2 seed, and first-round bye, in next week's six-team MIAC Playoffs.

Macalester (12-0-5, 7-0-2 MIAC) entered the game ranked No. 17 nationally in the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) top 25 poll released earlier in the day, and second in the North region, three spots ahead of fifth-ranked SJU.

Danny Baumann gave the Scots a 1-0 lead 5:25 into the game off a free kick from Alan Schembri-Wismayer.

Senior forward Paul Wageman (Roseville, Minn./DeLaSalle) tied the game at 1-1 for SJU on a free kick of his own from 20 yards out less than five minutes later (10:06 in). The goal was his team-leading ninth of the season and snapped Mac's shutout streak at 393:40. Wageman now has 11 points (5g/1a) in his last six games.

Schembri-Wismayer scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 9:20 into the second half.

SJU also held a statistical edge in corner kicks, 4-1, while the Scots posted a 14-5 margin in fouls and three yellow cards.
