COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's took advantage of a fast start and a strong first half en route to a 2-1 win over Macalester on Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Collegeville.
Junior
Robert Deetz (Owatonna, Minn.) gave SJU (6-4, 3-1 MIAC) a quick 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season, off a corner kick from sophomore
Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory). Newman sent a corner kick through the box where it found Deetz, situated at the far post, who sent a header to the far corner of the net.
Macalester (6-4-1, 2-2-0 MIAC) tied the match in the 34th minute on a costly turnover by the Johnnies. An SJU defender went to cross a pass to a teammate, but the ball went straight to the Scots' Danny Baumann, the lone Mac player in the area. Baumann possessed the ball at the top corner of the box, turned and fired a shot to the far corner of the net for his third goal of the season.
The Johnnies answered less than five minutes later, however, via sophomore
Dylan Lehrer's (Prior Lake, Minn.) first collegiate goal. Junior
Cole Howard (Ridgefield, Wash./Skyview) executed a perfect throw-in to the head of Lehrer, who leapt high above the crowd to tally what proved to be the game-winner.
Junior
Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made two saves to improve to 5-4 on the year. The Johnnies out-shot Mac 16-8 in the match, but the visitors turned up the heat in the second half to record a 4-3 edge.
SJU plays host to Carleton for Homecoming this Saturday, Oct. 4. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Haws Field in Collegeville.
