SJU Opens 2014 Soccer Season With 3-0 Shutout

MORRIS, Minn. – Three underclassmen tallied goals as Saint John's earned a 3-0 shutout at Minnesota-Morris in the season opener for both teams on Friday, Aug. 29.

Sophomore Zach Wright's (Blaine, Minn.) first collegiate goal, 26:02 into the match, gave SJU (1-0, 0-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead. Senior Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.) fielded a long punt from junior goalkeeper Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's), dribbled up the middle and found Wright open to his right, who then sniped a shot under the outstretched gloves of the Morris goalkeeper.

Sophomore Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) made it 2-0 in the 55th minute (54:33) with his second collegiate goal, on an assist from junior Alex Niederloh (Maple Grove, Minn.).

Freshman Alex Schnobrich (Houlton, Wis./Shattuck-St. Mary's) added to the Johnnies' lead off a crossing pass from sophomore Jake Anderson (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) with 9:30 remaining. Sophomore Justin DuQue (Union, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) added the second assist.

Lebahn made one save to earn the 11th win and seventh shutout of his career.

SJU out-shot UMM 15-5, 7-1 on goal, and recorded five corner kicks to the Cougars' zero.

The Johnnies travel south to face Simpson for a 7 p.m. match on Sunday, Aug. 31, in Indianola, Iowa.
