The Johnnie baseball team ends its regular season with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, May 3, in St. Peter. – Live Stats

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (19-8, 11-7 MIAC) dropped a pair of games to No. 12 St. Thomas, 13-6 and 10-4, on Thursday (May 1) in Collegeville. The Tommies broke a 4-2 deficit with 11 straight runs in game one's win and broke out of another tight score with five runs in the final three innings in game two. UST batted .408 (29-for-71) with eight extra-base hits on the day. Senior outfielder Joe Lampe (Osceola, Iowa/Clarke) ended the day 4-for-8 with eight total bases, a home run and double, while sophomore shortstop Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) drove in five runs. SJU entered the doubleheader batting .324 on the year but posted a .218 performance (12-for-55) at the plate.

A LOOK AT THE GUSTIES: Gustavus (6-19, 2-14 MIAC) enters today's home doubleheader with Carleton riding a 10-game MIAC losing streak (1-12 in last 13 conference games), including a pair of losses (3-2, 10-0) at Concordia on Tuesday (April 22). The Gusties have struggled at the plate, batting .273 but just .213 in conference play, and have struck out a total of 134 times (to only 68 walks) in 196 innings. The pitching staff has a 5.65 ERA and permits a .297 batting average.

LAST YEAR'S GAMES: SJU split last year's doubleheader with Gustavus on May 5 in Collegeville. Ryan Spengler '13 threw a complete-game shutout in game one's 1-0 nine-inning win before the Gusties erupted for 11 runs and 13 hits in game two's 11-3 loss. Only three batted balls, either a hit or out, left the infield for the Gusties off Spengler, who struck out five and walked three in the duel against fellow southpaw Grant Soderberg of GAC. Senior outfielder Dylan Graves (Mora, Minn.) started the bottom of the ninth with an infield single off Soderberg's shin and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Joey Long '13 won a 12-pitch battle with a double down the left-field line, scoring Graves from second for the game-winning run.

Game two was chock full of statistical oddities, demonstrating the age-old line of "that's why they play the games." Gustavus entered the second game of the doubleheader batting .239 as a team, but tripled its hit total from game one in only four innings en route to the win. Scott Benjamin and Max Fidler entered the contest batting a combined .241 (38-for-158) on the season but finished 7-for-9 with four RBI and three runs scored. Max Forster '13 broke the 9-0 shutout with a two-run homer, his third of the season, off the Gusties' Kellan Euerle in the sixth inning. Back-to-back doubles from juniors Brett Becker (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) and Aaron Pfaff (New Ulm, Minn./Cathedral) tallied another run in the inning, but GAC responded with two unearned runs in the top of the seventh. Euerle entered the start, his third of the season, with a 6.00 ERA and a .408 opponent batting average but held the Johnnies to four hits through five. SJU left the bases loaded in the first and third innings. SJU's leadoff hitter only reached three times on the day (3-for-16, .188) and the Johnnie bats were only 3-for-15 (.200) with runners in scoring position.

SERIES HISTORY: SJU narrowly leads the series with a 31-30 record since 1984, but is just 13-17 in St. Peter. The Johnnies have won only five games in their last 17 in St. Peter (5-12 record).
