SJU Baseball Ends Season With 3-0 Loss

MINNETONKA, Minn. – Saint John's ended its 2014 baseball season with a 3-0 loss to Saint Mary's in the MIAC Tournament on Saturday, May 10, in Minnetonka.

The Johnnies (21-10, 13-7 MIAC) totaled only three hits in the nine-inning affair, two of which came off the bat of senior outfielder Dylan Graves (Mora, Minn.).

Kevin Gannon homered on the first pitch he saw from sophomore Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview), with two outs, to give SMU (18-22, 13-7 MIAC) a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

A one-out walk, Strey's third of the game, came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Taylor Thelemann to make it 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Strey entered the start with four walks in 31.1 innings pitched this season.

Kevin Miley made it 3-0 with a solo homer off senior Justin Thompson (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) in the eighth inning. The earned run was Thompson's third allowed in 31 innings pitched.

Strey fell to 4-3 with the loss, allowing the two runs on five hits in six innings.

The Cardinals' Steph Scatassa picked up the win, allowing three hits with seven strikeouts in eight innings. SJU batted 1-for-10 with runners on base, 2-for-10 with two outs and 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position in the game.

Notes: SJU entered the MIAC Tournament batting .322 (293-for-911) on the year…the Johnnies batted .131 (8-for-61) in the two tournament games…four Johnnies (Graves, Tom Druk, Joe Lampe, Aaron Pfaff) accounted for the Johnnies' eight hits in the tourney…SJU batted a combined .095 (2-for-21) with runners on base, .105 (2-for-19) with two outs and 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the two games.
