Box Score 2 COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 12 St. Thomas batted .408 (29-for-71) with eight extra-base hits in a doubleheader sweep at Saint John's, 13-6 and 10-4, on Thursday, May 1, in Collegeville.
The Tommies (27-7, 16-2 MIAC) broke a 4-2 deficit with 11 straight runs in game one's win and broke out of another tight score with five runs in the final three innings in game two.
Fueled by a two-out, bases-clearing double from sophomore shortstop
Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.), SJU (19-8, 11-7 MIAC) gained a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning of game one with four unearned runs. UST answered, however, with three runs in the third inning, five in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Senior outfielder
Joe Lampe (Osceola, Iowa/Clarke) started the bottom of the sixth with a double and senior third baseman
Luke Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) walked with one out. Both came around to score on a double from junior second baseman
Brett Becker (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) to end the scoring for both teams.
Sophomore
Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) was saddled with the loss, allowing nine runs on 13 hits in 3.1 innings. He allowed only four earned runs in 28 innings pitched prior to the start.
Lampe cut the visitors' lead to 2-1 with a solo homer, his second of the season, in the second inning of game two. UST added three runs in the top half of the fifth, but SJU answered with three runs of its own in the bottom half. Junior outfielder
Aaron Pfaff (New Ulm, Minn./Cathedral) drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to plate the first run before Hershey drove in two with an RBI single.
St. Thomas pulled away late with two unearned runs in the seventh and three more, two earned, in the ninth.
Freshman
Derek Graves (Mora, Minn.) fell to 3-2 on the year, allowing five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.
Lampe ended the day 4-for-8 with eight total bases, while Hershey drove in five runs. SJU entered the doubleheader batting .324 on the year but posted a .218 performance (12-for-55) at the plate Thursday.
The Johnnies wrap up their regular-season schedule with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, May 3, in St. Peter.
