Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's settled for another conference split at Carleton on Saturday, April 19, in Northfield.
The Johnnies (14-5, 6-4 MIAC) obliterated a 2-0 deficit with nine runs on six hits in a 9-2 win in game one, but totaled only five hits and batted 1-for-15 with runners on base, 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, in a 3-1 loss in game two.
Carleton (15-9, 7-5 MIAC) gained a 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the third.
Sophomore shortstop
Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) started the seventh-inning rally with a one-out walk, before seniors
Tony Gazich (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) and
Dylan Graves (Mora, Minn.) singled to load the bases. Senior outfielder
Tom Druk (Plymouth, Minn./Orono) put SJU on the scoreboard with a sac fly to center for the second out. Senior third baseman
Luke Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and senior catcher
Justin Thompson (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) brought in the tying run with another hit-by-pitch. Senior
Tom Lambert (Broomfield, Colo./Holy Trinity) followed with a walk, for another run, and junior outfielder
Brett Becker (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) tallied an RBI single. Junior outfielder
Aaron Pfaff (New Ulm, Minn./Cathedral) broke the game open with a bases-clearing double, and scored on an RBI single from Hershey. Graves ended the scoring with an RBI single of his own.
Sophomore
Joe Stanton (Stillwater, Minn.) went the distance, allowing the two runs on seven hits. He struck out two and walked two to improve to 3-1 on the year.
The Johnnies' top of the order (Pfaff, Hershey, Graves) combined to go 7-for-13 with five RBI and four runs scored at the plate in game two, but 0-for-12 in the nightcap.
Gazich started the second with a double, advanced to third on a groundout from Larson and scored on a wild pitch.
The Knights strung together three straight hits to start the fourth and score two runs to gain the lead, then did it again in the sixth to plate the third and final run.
Junior
Collin Felhaber (North St. Paul, Minn.) was saddled with the loss, his first of the year (3-1), by allowing the three runs (two earned) on nine hits. He struck out five and walked one in six innings. Junior
Jack Hamilton (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) and freshman
Derek Graves (Mora, Minn.) combined for two innings of scoreless relief.
Druk and sophomore catcher
Gabe MacDonald (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) led SJU with two hits apiece in game two as the Johnnies left nine men on base and went 0-for-10 with two outs.
The Johnnies play host to Concordia-Moorhead for a rescheduled 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Monday, April 21, at Saint John's Field in Collegeville.
