MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's lost five of the six singles matches, including two via the super-breaker after winning the first set, in a 6-3 loss to St. Thomas on Sunday, March 16, at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
SJU (4-4, 0-1 MIAC) entered singles competition with a 2-1 lead thanks to a pair of wins in doubles play. Hansen, however, was the lone Johnnie to win a singles match against the Tommies (5-2, 4-1 MIAC), at No. 1, 6-2 and 6-0. Junior Jordan Otto (Rice, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) won his first set at No. 4 with a tie breaker, 7-6 (7-3), but dropped the second (6-3) and the super-breaker (10-7). Freshman Steven Wirtz's (Overland Park, Kan./Bishop Miege) loss at No. 5 followed a similar pattern. He won the first set 6-4 but the match slipped away with a 6-1 defeat in the second and a 10-7 clincher in the super-breaker.
