ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey recorded a season-high 54 shots on goal and lit the lamp twice on the power play in a 5-1 win over Bethel on Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

In addition to the 2-for-3 performance on the man advantage, SJU (14-8, 8-5 MIAC) rejected all five Bethel power plays, hit the pipe four times and had a goal disallowed due to a high stick.

The Johnnies reached their previous season-high of 44 shots on goal (5-3 win versus Wisconsin-Stout on Jan. 10) in the first two periods. The 54 shots on goal are the most for SJU since it registered 55 in a 2-2 tie against Concordia (Wis.) on Nov. 26, 2011.

Freshman defenseman Brady Riesgraf (Chaska, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal, a slap shot through the goaltender's five-hole, 15:17 into the first period. The lone assist went to junior forward John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.), his 75th career point.

Senior forward Jason Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) extended the lead 2:49 later. He circled around the net and snuck a shot in on BU goaltender Steven Bolton, who fell backwards with the puck across the crease. Junior forward Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) recorded the lone assist.

SJU turned on the heat in the second period, posting a 26-11 advantage in shots, as well as three shots off the pipe and a disallowed goal from sophomore Andrew Commers (Edina, Minn.).

Haeg tallied his fifth goal of the season 13:10 into the frame, with assists going to junior defenseman Nick Senta (Savage, Minn.) and senior forward Justin Hochsprung (Alexandria, Minn.).

Senior captain Trent Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) made it 4-0 with a power-play goal, a one-timer off the faceoff win from Haeg, at the 19:29 mark of the second. The three-point game gives Haeg, who now has nine points (5g/4a) in six career games against the Royals, his third consecutive 20-point season.

Travis Payne put BU (3-17-2, 2-10-1 MIAC) on the scoreboard with his 10th goal of the season 4:16 into the third period.

Phil Johnson ended the scoring 1:39 later with assists credited to junior defenseman Dave Mylrea (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Jason Johnson.

Sophomore goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 28 saves to improve to 12-6 on the season.

With the victory, SJU head hockey coach Doug Schueller (66-72-13 record) moved into a tie with Denny Hartman (1981-88, 66-118-2 record) for second in the program's history in wins.

The return game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.
