Johnnies Tie No. 10 UW-Eau Claire, 3-3

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey and No. 10 Wisconsin-Eau Claire skated to a 3-3 tie on Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

Ross Andersen gave UWEC (1-0-1 overall) a 1-0 lead with a breakaway goal 8:30 into the game.

Junior Neal Smith (Rogers, Minn.) tied it at 1-1 with his fourth goal in as many games 7:29 into the second period. Smith intercepted an errant pass from the Blugolds' goaltender and fired the puck into the net from the circle.

Freshman Tyler Dunagan (Maple Grove, Minn.) gave SJU (2-0-2 overall) a brief 2-1 lead 2:09 later with his second goal of the year on a misdirection of senior Nick Vatnsdal's (Independence, Minn.) shot from the point. Junior Andrew Commers (Edina, Minn.) was credited with the second assist.

Brandon Wahlin tied the game back up at the 13:30 mark of the second on a rebound of his own shot in front of the net. 

Junior Tyson Fulton (Champlin, Minn.) went coast-to-coast, split the Blugold defense and gave SJU a 3-2 lead with a pretty goal 6:46 into the third period. Vatnsdal earned his second assist of the day on the scoring play.

Andersen, however, tied the game with a shorthanded, breakaway goal less than two minutes later.

Junior Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 23 saves for SJU, which out-shot Eau Claire 33-26 in the game. 

The Johnnies open conference play with a 7:30 p.m. contest at St. Olaf on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Northfield Ice Arena.
