Johnnie Hockey Wins Conference Opener, 4-1

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – No. 15 Saint John's won its MIAC hockey opener by a 4-1 score at St. Olaf on Friday, Nov. 14, in Northfield.

Senior forward John Carroll (Eagan, Minn.) gave SJU (3-0-2, 1-0-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead 9:21 into the game.

Senior defenseman Nick Senta (Savage, Minn.) snapped the Johnnies' 0-for-15 streak on the power play with 30 seconds left in the first period. 

Sophomore forward Dan McNamara (Grand Rapids, Mich.) extended the lead to three 7:22 into the second period before St. Olaf (1-4, 0-1 MIAC) cut it to 3-1 on a goal from Peter Lindblad 3:10 later.

Senior forward Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) put the game away on an empty-netter with 41 seconds remaining.

Junior goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) tied a career high with 39 saves to improve to 2-0-2 on the season. The previous mark of 39 saves was set in the 4-2 win over St. Thomas on Dec. 13, 2002. Soley now has a .962 save percentage and 1.20 GAA in four games this season.

STO out-shot SJU 40-25, including a 31-15 advantage in the final two periods.

The Johnnies return home to host the Oles for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
