Three-Goal Third Period Leads SJU Hockey to 4-2 Win

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 13/15 Saint John's scored three goals in the third period to post a 4-2 win over Saint Mary's on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud.

Following a scoreless first period, junior Neal Smith (Rogers, Minn.) stuffed his fifth goal of the season to the back of the net 6:09 into the second period to give SJU (5-0-3, 2-0-1 MIAC) a 1-0 lead. Classmate Joe Freemark (Lakeville, Minn.) and sophomore Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play.

Jed McGlasson tied it at the 14:34 mark of the second with a power-play goal for SMU (2-4-2, 0-2-2 MIAC).

Freshman Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) started the third-period goal barrage with his fifth of the season 6:32 into the third period, with an assist going to senior Nick Senta (Savage, Minn.).

Junior Andrew Commers (Edina, Minn.) tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal 45 seconds later on assists from senior Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) and freshman Jeff Flicker (Stillwater, Minn.).

Junior Tyson Fulton (Champlin, Minn.) extended the Johnnies' lead to three with a four-on-three, power-play goal with 3:32 remaining.

The Cardinals' Martin Gruse ended the scoring for both teams with 34 seconds left on the power play.

Junior Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 27 saves to improve to 4-0-3 on the season.

SJU out-shot the Cardinals 33-29 in the game, including a 14-9 margin in the third period.

The Johnnies travel to face No. 12 St. Scholastica for a 7 p.m. non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth.
