Box ScoreBLAINE, Minn. – Saint John's hockey and No. 5 St. Thomas played to a 0-0 tie in the season opener for both teams, a non-conference game as part of the MIAC Showcase, on Friday, Oct. 31, at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.
Junior goaltender
Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 32 saves to record his fifth career shutout and just his second tie in 45 games between the pipes for SJU.
Senior forwards
John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) and
Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) led SJU with five shots apiece.
St. Thomas won the exhibition shootout 2-0, but the decision had no effect on the result since it was a non-conference game.
The Tommies out-shot SJU 32-26 in the game, though the Johnnies posted a 6-2 advantage in overtime.
The two teams will next meet in the final weekend series of the regular season Feb. 19-20. The last time SJU and UST played to a tie was nearly five years ago to the date, a 1-1 draw on Nov. 1, 2009, in Blaine.
The Johnnies wrap up their MIAC Showcase with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Hamline on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Schwan Super Rink.
