Box ScoreBLAINE, Minn. – A night after recording the first scoreless tie in the program's history, Saint John's hockey jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 6-2 win over Hamline in a non-conference game as part of the MIAC Showcase on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.
Junior defenseman
Joe Freemark (Lakeville, Minn.) started the scoring for SJU (1-0-1, 0-0-0 MIAC) with his third collegiate goal 53 seconds after Hamline killed off a five-minute major penalty, 6:33 into the game. Senior defenseman
Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.) and sophomore forward
Dan McNamara (Grand Rapids, Mich.) collected the assists.
Freshman
Tyler Dunagan (Maple Grove, Minn.) made it 2-0 with a wrap-around goal, the first of his collegiate career, with 3:12 left in the first period on another assist from Cossette, with junior
Andrew Commers (Edina, Minn.) adding the other.
Senior forward
John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) found the net 25 seconds into the second period from senior forward
Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.), and the two repeated the scoring play 6:14 later to make it 4-0. Cossette added his third assist of the night on Haeg's second goal.
Junior
Neal Smith (Rogers, Minn.) tallied the first of his two goals on the night, on a redirect of classmate
Alex Ach's (Champlin, Minn.) shot, with 11:06 left in the second period. Dunagan recorded the second assist.
Jonny Gehrt spoiled the shutout for junior
Jason Dzurik (Loretto, Minn.) with a power-play goal 4:06 into the third period for Hamline (0-1-0, 0-0-0 MIAC). Dzurik made 31 saves to earn the win in his first collegiate start and varsity appearance.
Smith extended the Johnnies' lead to 6-1 with a shorthanded goal 8:42 into the final frame, on assists from Haeg and senior captain
Dave Mylrea (Brooklyn Park, Minn.). The multi-point game was the 24th of Haeg's career.
HU's Kevin Novakovich ended the scoring for both teams with 6:20 remaining.
The Johnnies return home to host Wisconsin-Superior for their home opener at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
