Johnnies Win Third Straight, 3-0 at Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. – Saint John's soccer clinched its third consecutive MIAC-Playoff berth with a 3-0 road win at Saint Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 25, in Winona.

The six-team MIAC Playoffs are scheduled to begin with a quarterfinal round on Tuesday, Nov. 4, followed by the semifinals the following day (Wednesday, Nov. 5) and the championship match on Saturday, Nov. 8. The MIAC Playoff champion receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Junior midfielder Alex Niederloh (Maple Grove, Minn.) gave SJU (9-6, 6-3 MIAC) a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the 31st minute, his third tally of the season and third game-winning goal. Five of his six career goals have been game-winners.

Junior defender Cole Howard (Ridgefield, Wash./Skyview) tallied his first goal of the season, and first since his freshman season (Sept. 2, 2012), 2:19 into the second half off a free kick from freshman midfielder Alex Schnobrich (Houlton, Wis./Shattuck-St. Mary's). 

Sophomore midfielder Zach Wright (Blaine, Minn.) padded the Johnnies' lead with his third goal of the season in the 78th minute. Schnobrich collected his second assist of the day on the scoring play and now has six points (2g/2a) in his last two matches.

Junior goalkeeper Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made one save in 80:15 and combined with freshman Treyton Neuharth (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) for the shutout.

SJU out-shot the Cardinals (5-10-1, 1-7-0 MIAC) 15-7 (7-1 on goal), including a 6-0 margin (2-0 on goal) in the first half.

The Johnnies make a brief return to non-conference play with a 3:30 p.m. match against Wisconsin-Superior on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Haws Field in Collegeville.
