COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer vaulted into second place in the conference standings with a 2-0 win over Augsburg on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Haws Field in Collegeville.
The win, coupled with 1-0 losses from Carleton (at Hamline) and No. 25 Gustavus Adolphus (at Macalester) on Saturday, sent SJU (8-6, 5-3 MIAC) up to second place, four points behind league-leading St. Olaf (10-3-1, 6-0-1 MIAC).
Freshman
Alex Schnobrich (Houlton, Wis./Shattuck-St. Mary's) scored the brace (soccer lingo for two goals in a match) for SJU, his second and third of the season. The first goal was on a free kick from near 30 yards out in the 23rd minute, while the second was a laser from the top of the box 11:51 into the second half.
Junior
Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made five saves to earn his fourth shutout of the year, 10th of his career, and improved to 7-6 on the season.
The match started with an eventful first two minutes, in which SJU had a penalty kick waived and sophomore
Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) had a goal disallowed.
The two teams combined for 32 fouls and eight cards, seven yellows and a red that was issued to sophomore
Jake Anderson (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy), which left SJU down a man on the field for the last 14:06 of the match. Augsburg (5-8-2, 3-3-1 MIAC) held advantages in shots (13-7), corner kicks (5-2) and fouls (17-15).
SJU hits the road for a 4 p.m. match next Saturday, Oct. 25, at Saint Mary's in Winona.
