Johnnies Set for Saturday's Journey to Winona

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (7-8, 5-5 MIAC) ended No. 10 St. Thomas' 19-game conference win streak with a 77-69 victory Monday night (Jan. 20) in Collegeville. The Johnnies shot 57.4 percent (27-for-47) from the field and out-rebounded the Tommies 36-26 in the game, which led to scoring advantages of 8-3 in second-chance points and 40-28 in the paint. UST, meanwhile, shot 39.3 percent (24-for-61) from the floor, including 35 percent (7-for-20) from three-point range, for the game. The Tommies entered the night shooting 49.2 percent from the field and out-rebounding their opponents by a +7.5 margin (33.6-26.1). SJU led by as much as 12, 58-46, with 7:43 remaining and made 12 of its final 14 free throws to seal the upset. UST's last lead in the game was by three, 27-24, following a pair of free throws from Erik Tengwall with 5:14 left in the first half. Senior guard Patrick Butcher (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) made one of his first three shots of the game before going 6-for-7 (2-for-3 from three-point) to spark SJU with 18 points in the first half, including eight in the final 3:42 before halftime. The Johnnies shot 57.7 percent (15-for-26) to the Tommies' 40 percent (12-for-30) in the first half but led by only three, 37-34, at the break due to nine points off eight SJU turnovers.

Butcher led four Johnnies in double figures with 20 points and added four assists, while classmate Seth Marx (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) followed with 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior post Blake Maslonkowski (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo) and sophomore guard Alex Schmitt (Chaska, Minn./Waconia) chipped in 10 points apiece. SJU ended the night 4-for-7 from behind the arc and 19-for-23 from the free-throw line.

MOMENTUM SHIFT: SJU is now 3-2 in its last five meetings with the Tommies since losing 10 straight in the series from 2007-11.

6-0: The largest scoring run by the Tommies was six points, with 13:41 left in the first half, to give them an early 16-8 lead. The visitors' last lead in the game was by three, 27-24, with 5:14 left in the first half. UST tied the game at 42-42 with a 5-0 run early in the second half before SJU rattled off 10 consecutive points with 11:43 remaining.

51.1%: Butcher currently leads the MIAC (all games) with a .511 shooting percentage (23-for-45) from three-point range. He entered his senior season shooting 30 percent (21-for-70) from behind the arc in 74 previous games.

THREE FROM 200: Senior guard Kevin McKenzie (De Pere, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) is three assists away from 200 for his career and 31 shy of tying Corey Jackson (1992-96) for 10th on the Johnnies' all-time list. He currently boasts a +2.1 assist/turnover ratio (197-96) in 93 career games.

A LOOK AT THE CARDINALS: Saint Mary's (2-14, 1-10 MIAC) fell by a 88-74 score at Bethel Wednesday (Jan. 22) night, which extended its losing streak to seven games since defeating Macalester (67-51) at home Jan. 2. Sophomore Will Swiggum leads the team in both scoring (11.6 ppg.) and rebounding (7.4 rpg.). His average of 7.4 boards per game is tied for fourth in the MIAC (all games). The Cardinals are shooting 39.2 percent from the field this season, including 29.8 percent (78-for-262) from three-point range, while averaging 14.8 turnovers per game.

EARLIER THIS SEASON: Saint John's took advantage of a fast start to the game in a 68-57 win over Saint Mary's in the Johnnies' conference opener earlier this season on Dec. 7 in Collegeville. SJU made seven of its first 10 shots and led by as much as 19, 29-10, with 6:42 left in the first half. SMU, however, rode a 16-6 run into halftime to trail by only nine (35-26). The Cardinals trailed by only six (47-41) with 9:37 remaining in the game, but Schmitt sparked SJU to a 15-6 run to bring the Johnnies' lead back to 15 with five minutes left. Schmitt tallied all 13 of his points in a 4:10 span. Maslonkowski led five Johnnies in double figures with 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double as a Johnnie. Senior Jack Wittenborg (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) added 11 points, while Butcher and sophomore Joe Risinger (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) added 10 points apiece. Senior Kevin McKenzie (De Pere, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) tied his career-high of eight assists with eight in the first half alone and finished with 12 for the game. The 12 assists is the most for a Johnnie since Feb. 19, 2002 (12 by Ryan Keating vs. Macalester). Evan Pederson led four Cardinals in double figures with a game-high 21 points on 10-for-15 shooting and added six assists. He entered the contest averaging 5.2 points per game and shooting 24.4 percent from the field.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 78-21 all-time against Saint Mary's under the direction of head coach Jim Smith, including a 29-20 record in Winona. SJU has won 44 of the last 52 meetings overall, in which all eight losses were at SMU Gym.
