Johnnies Complete Sweep of Concordia With 2-1 Win

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's built a 2-0 lead and denied all six of Concordia's power-play opportunities, including a two-minute 5-on-3 advantage late in the third period, to complete the weekend sweep with a 2-1 win over the Cobbers on Sunday, Jan. 19, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

The Johnnies (10-6, 5-3 MIAC) have now won five straight and 16 of the last 18 meetings (16-1-1 record) with Concordia at the National Hockey Center.

Sophomore forward Andrew Commers (Edina, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with a rebound goal from sophomore forward Neal Smith's (Rogers, Minn.) initial shot at the 10:10 mark of the first period. Sophomore forward Tyson Fulton (Champlin, Minn.) tallied the second assist.

Junior forward John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) added to the Johnnies' lead with 2:42 remaining in the opening frame, his third goal of the season. Senior defenseman Trent Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) took advantage of a 3-on-2 and feathered a pass to Haeg, who re-directed the one-timer to the back of the net. Junior defenseman Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.) added the second assist.

Caleb Suderman cut the Cobbers' (9-6-2, 3-4-1 MIAC) deficit in half with his 11th goal of the season with 3:49 left in the second period.

SJU stormed out of the gate in the third period, registering 14 shots on goal to the Cobbers' three, until Trent Johnson and Cossette were called for separate penalties with 5:31 remaining.

Sophomore goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 30 saves, including six on the late 5-on-3 penalty kill, to improve to 9-4 on the season (24-9-1 career).

SJU out-shot the Cobbers 36-31 in the game, including a 26-18 margin after the first period, and has now successfully denied each of its opponents' last 30 power-play opportunities since the first period of its 3-1 loss at Augsburg Dec. 6. The Johnnies have now either defeated or tied the Cobbers in 29 of the last 34 meetings (27-5-2 record), including a 23-4-2 record in the last 29 games since the 2002-03 season and a 10-3-2 record under the direction of head coach Doug Schueller

The Johnnies make a brief return to non-conference action with a 7:30 p.m. game, their only contest of the week, at Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Dunn County Ice Arena in Menomonie, Wis. SJU defeated the Blue Devils by a 5-3 score Jan. 10 in St. Cloud.
