Offense Comes Alive Late for SJU in 2-1 Overtime Win

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Junior Phil Johnson's fourth goal of the season, on the power play 1:41 into overtime, gave Saint John's a 2-1 non-conference win over Marian (Wis.) on Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

SJU (8-6, 3-3 MIAC) struggled on the power play throughout the game until Johnson's game-winner, going 1-for-6, including a combined 3:13 with a 5-on-3 advantage.

Tyler Klein, the Sabres' offensive leader with 21 points (9g/12a), gave the visitors a quick 1-0 lead 1:14 into the game.

Junior forward John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) tied it at 1-1 with his 20th collegiate goal 5:40 later, with assists going to junior defenseman Dave Mylrea (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and senior Josh Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.), which extended Gross' consecutive-games streak with a point to nine games (six goals and eight assists during the span).

SJU came alive in the second half of the third period, totaling 18 shots, 10 on goal, in the final 11:59 (including overtime).

Sixteen seconds into the overtime power play, freshman defenseman Brady Riesgraf (Chaska, Minn.) sent a shot from the point in on net and the rebound when to Johnson, who was all alone in front. Freshman forward Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) added the second assist on what was Johnson's 20th collegiate goal.

Sophomore goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 37 saves to improve to 7-4 on the season (22-9-1 career). Marian (4-9-2, 3-4-1 NCHA) out-shot SJU 38-32 in the game, including a combined 25-15 advantage in the second and third periods.

The Johnnies return to conference play with a pair of afternoon home games against Concordia-Moorhead next Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 18-19. Both contests are scheduled for a 2 p.m. puck drop at the National Hockey Center.
