TUCSON, Ariz. – Saint John's scored 19 runs in two games but settled for a 1-1 record on Tuesday, March 26, in Tucson, Ariz.
The Johnnies (6-5 overall) surrendered a 9-3, eighth-inning lead in a 10-9 loss to Buena Vista (Iowa) to start the day before defeating Carthage (Wis.) 10-5 in the nightcap.
Junior Luke Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) collected three hits and five RBI, all with two outs, in the loss. Sophomore Aaron Pfaff (New Ulm, Minn./Cathedral) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and classmate Kurt Jantscher (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Senior Connor Cline (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) allowed three runs on five hits in six innings. The Beavers tallied seven runs on nine hits in the final two innings to earn the win.
Pfaff was one of four Johnnies to record two hits in the 10-5 win, including a bases-clearing double in the third inning. Junior Dylan Graves (Mora, Minn.) gave SJU an early lead with a two-run triple, the team's first of the season, in the first. Sophomore Brett Becker (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) and freshman Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) also posted two hits.
Sophomore Tyler Delwiche (Andover, Minn./Totino-Grace) made his first varsity start but did not factor in the decision. He allowed three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. Sophomore Collin Felhaber (North St. Paul, Minn.) earned the win (1-1), while classmate Jack Hamilton (Hopkins, Minn.) recorded two innings of scoreless relief.
SJU left 30 men on base, including 17 against Carthage alone.
The Johnnies take on Oberlin (Ohio) for a 9 a.m. doubleheader Wednesday, March 27.
