MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's settled for a doubleheader split against Wisconsin-Superior in its final baseball appearance at the Metrodome on Thursday, March 14, in Minneapolis. The Johnnies (3-4 overall) earned a 6-3 victory in game one before surrendering eight runs in the fourth inning of game two's 10-3 loss.
SJU scored a run, unearned, on the scoreboard first to open the doubleheader thanks to an RBI single from junior Tom Druk (Plymouth, Minn./Orono) in the second inning. The Yellowjackets (1-3 overall) answered with a run to tie in the bottom half of the inning before the Johnnies retaliated with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings each.
Sophomore Aaron Pfaff (New Ulm, Minn./Cathedral) started the third with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Senior Joey Long (Belvidere, Ill./Rockford Boylan) made it 3-1 with an RBI single, scoring junior Dylan Graves (Mora, Minn.). Junior Justin Thompson (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) recorded a one-out single in the fourth , advanced to third on a double by Pfaff, and scored on a groundout from sophomore Brett Becker (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View). Senior Connor Cline (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) brought in Pfaff with an RBI single.
Druk just missed his first collegiate home run with a two-out double off the left-field fence in the fifth. Thompson followed suit with a double of his own in the next at-bat to make it 6-1 in favor of SJU.
Senior Scott Schroeder (Richmond, Minn./Rocori) earned his first win of the season, allowing one run on only two hits in five innings of work. Sophomore Kurt Jantscher (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) allowed two runs in an inning of relief and Long pitched a scoreless seventh for his second save of the season.
Superior loaded the bases in the top of the first in game two but was held to one run. A leadoff, solo home run by Robbie Veith made it 2-0 in the third inning before the floodgates opened in the fourth, which started with an omen. Sam Holden lifted a routine flyball to left field to start the inning, but Pfaff lost it in the combination of the stadium's lights and the famous roof for a double. He advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a Texas-leaguer off the handle of Brady Flaherty's bat. Consecutive singles added two more runs to the scoreboard (5-0), ending senior Adam Wenker's (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) day.
Sophomore Collin Felhaber (North St. Paul, Minn.) surrendered a single and walked a batter before Jeff Miller broke the game wide open with a grand slam. The Yellowjackets added one more run in the inning on three groundball singles off sophomore Jack Hamilton (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins).
Cline brought in Pfaff for the Johnnies' first run of the game in the fifth and SJU loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth. Pfaff added made it 10-2 with a sacrifice fly and junior Tom Lambert (Broomfield, Colo./Holy Trinity) ended the scoring for both teams with his first career varsity hit and RBI.
Wenker took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Five other SJU pitchers took the mound, while head coach Jerry Haugen played 18 others in either the field or at the plate.
Pfaff ended the day 4-for-7 at the plate, while Cline was 3-for-7. Cline is now batting .500 (13-for-26) through the Johnnies' first seven games this season.
The Johnnies travel to face North Park (Ill.) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 23, in Chicago.
