A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Augsburg shot 68 percent (34-for-50) from the field to snap Saint John's (10-11, 9-7 MIAC) win streak at seven games with a 106-87 victory on Feb. 4 in Minneapolis. Augsburg shot 63.3 percent (19-for-30) and out-scored SJU 24-12 in the paint to take a 48-41 lead into halftime. SJU cut its deficit to six (85-79) with 4:20 left, but shots in the paint on each of the Johnnies' next three possessions rolled around the rim and out and Augsburg proceeded to out-score the visitors 21-8 the rest of the way. The Auggies finished 31-for-39 at the free-throw line as fouls were whistled 27-15 against SJU. The home team shot 7-for-11 from three-point range in the contest and 75 percent (15-for-20) from the floor in the second half. Junior Seth Marx (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) led all scorers with 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season. Freshman Alex Schmitt (Chaska, Minn./Waconia) added 15 points off the bench before fouling out with 58 seconds remaining. Senior Chris Neumann (Winsted, Minn./Holy Trinity) totaled nine points in 17 minutes of play due to foul trouble. He fouled out with 4:35 left. Junior Patrick Butcher (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) followed with eight points in the start in place of SJU's second-leading scorer (9.9 ppg., 11.2 ppg. in MIAC play), freshman Mitchell Kuck (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), who is battling infections in both ears. Kuck collected seven points in 12 minutes off the bench. SJU out-rebounded Augsburg 30-27, including 15-7 on the offensive glass, but surrendered a 44-32 scoring advantage in the paint.
A LOOK AT THE COBBERS: Concordia (15-7, 12-5 MIAC) enters Wednesday's contest riding a four-game winning streak after earning back-to-back road wins at Macalester (85-52) and Saint Mary's (61-60) over the weekend. The Cobbers' top six scorers are all seniors: Ebo Nana-Kweson (13.9 ppg.), Andrew Martinson (11.5 ppg.), Aaron Lindahl (10.3 ppg.), Dewon McKenzie (9.9 ppg.), Brandon Fisher (8.8 ppg.) and Jason Huus (8.0 ppg.). CC is 8-1 at home this season, including a 54-52 upset of St. Thomas Jan. 21. The lone loss was to MSU-Moorhead (70-57) in the home opener Nov. 20.
EARLIER THIS SEASON: Concordia escaped Saint John's with a 70-67 win earlier this season on Jan. 9 in Collegeville. Neumann tallied career highs in points (22) and rebounds (10) to record his first career double-double on a perfect 11-for-11 night from the floor. He fouled out with 33 seconds remaining. The rest of the team combined to shoot 36.2 percent (17-for-47), including 30.4 percent (7-for-23) from the other four starters. Concordia led by eight (66-58) with 55 seconds left before SJU cut it down to one (68-67) with 17 seconds remaining. Five quick points off the bench from Schmitt and a layup by junior Jack Wittenborg (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) cut the Cobbers' lead to 68-65. Kuck turned a CC turnover on the in-bounds play into a bucket to make it 68-67. Concordia's Brandon Fisher made the first of two free throws with 12 seconds left, but the Johnnies' final effort, a baseline runner from junior Trevor Barth (Roanoke, Texas/Nolan Catholic) fell off the iron. The shot attempt was just the second of Barth's varsity career. Ebo Nana-Kweson made the first of his two free throws but Wittenborg's three-quarter-court heave was off the mark. Wittenborg followed Neumann with 11 points and Kuck added seven for SJU. Fisher and Aaron Lindahl led Concordia with 14 points apiece. The Cobbers entered the game shooting 50.1 percent from the field but finished the game at 45.1 percent (23-for-51), including a 2-for-14 showing (14.3 percent) from three-point range. SJU shot 48.3 percent (28-for-58) for the game and held a 17-7 scoring advantage off turnovers, including an 11-1 margin in the second half alone. The loss was just the sixth at home in 49 seasons for SJU head coach Jim Smith (44-6 career record) against the Cobbers, and first since Nov. 30, 2005 (71-64).
SERIES HISTORY: SJU is 69-31 all-time against the Cobbers under the direction of Smith, but just 25-25 in Moorhead with losses in each of the last five trips.
START A NEW TREND: The Johnnies combined to shoot only 38.6 percent (108-for-280) from the field and 31.5 percent (28-for-89) from three-point range, while committing an average of 11 turnovers per contest, in their last five games at Memorial Auditorium.
