Marx Named All-MIAC, Kuck Earns All-Rookie Honors

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – A trio of Saint John's University basketball student-athletes earned All-MIAC recognition on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Junior wing Seth Marx (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) received All-MIAC first-team honors, freshman wing Mitchell Kuck (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) was named to the five-man All-Rookie team and senior post Chris Neumann (Winsted, Minn./Holy Trinity) was named All-MIAC honorable mention.

Marx led SJU in scoring (12.1 ppg.), rebounding (6.2 rpg.), minutes played (28.8 mpg.), three-pointers (63), blocked shots (20) and double-doubles (4) in 2012-13. He posted 15 games with 10 points or more, including three of 26 or more, all of which took place on the road: 32 at Gustavus (Dec. 1), 28 at Augsburg (Feb. 4) and 26 at Concordia (Feb. 6). Marx begins the 2013-14 basketball season tied for eighth in school history with 126 career three-pointers (126-for-328), 54 from the record of 180 held by Larry Bassett (1988-92).

Kuck tied with Neumann for the team-lead in steals (24) and finished second in scoring (10.7 ppg.), assists (56) and three-pointers (25). He finished second among freshmen with an average of 11.6 points in conference play and is the first Johnnie named to the rookie team since Andy Burns '12 in 2008-09.

Neumann led the MIAC (conference games only) with a .676 shooting percentage, and his .609 shooting percentage in all games led the team. A member of the MIAC All-Sportsmanship team for the second consecutive season, Neumann ended his career with 494 points (8.2 ppg.) and a .563 shooting percentage.

SJU finished in a tie for fifth with an 11-9 record in the MIAC to earn its 20th trip to the conference playoffs in 2012-13. Head coach Jim Smith (755-535 career record) tied long-time (1935-70) Oklahoma State head coach Hank Iba (755-340 career record) for 18th on the NCAA's all-time wins list Feb. 16 and enters his 50th season at SJU in 2013-14 needing four wins to tie Ed Diddle (Western Kentucky, 1923-64) for 17th.
