Johnnies End Season With Road Playoff Loss, 74-67

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's ended its 2012-13 season with a hard-fought 74-67 loss at Augsburg in the quarterfinal round of the MIAC playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Minneapolis.

Augsburg (20-6, 15-6 MIAC) shot 61.5 percent (16-for-26) with six three-pointers to gain a 38-27 halftime lead. SJU led by as much as six (19-13) with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half, but the Auggies responded with a 25-8 run.

The Johnnies (12-14, 11-9 MIAC) burst out of the locker room with an 18-4 run to start the second half, but Augsburg bounced back with a 9-1 run to re-gain a 51-46 lead. SJU cut its deficit to three, 70-67, with 43 seconds remaining, but the Auggies scored the game's final four points.

Junior Seth Marx (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) drilled six three-pointers and led SJU with 20 points and six rebounds. He begins the 2013-14 season tied for eighth in school history with 126 career three-pointers (126-for-328), 54 from the record of 180 held by Larry Bassett (1988-92).

Freshman Mitchell Kuck (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) followed with 17 points and four assists, while junior Jack Wittenborg (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) totaled 10 points and three assists. Senior Chris Neumann (Winsted, Minn./Holy Trinity) ended his collegiate career with nine points and six boards.

Dan Kornbaum led the Auggies with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Andy Seidlitz (19 points) and Tyler Schmidt (18 points) combined to record seven of the team's nine (9-for-17) three-pointers in the game. Seidlitz led the way with 13 points (5-5, 3-3) on a perfect 5-for-5 showing from the floor (3-for-3 from three-point range) in the first half. He entered the game averaging 8.4 points per game and shooting 31.9 percent from beyond the arc on the year.

SJU forced 17 turnovers but was out-rebounded 34-25 and only held a 23-21 edge in points off turnovers. The Johnnies finished the contest at 43.1 percent (25-for-58) from the field, including 13 missed layups/shots in the paint, compared to a 52.9-percent (27-for-51) output from the home team.
