ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's won a share of the MIAC regular-season championship with a 4-1 victory over Bethel on Saturday, Feb. 16, in St. Cloud.
The title is the eighth in the program's history and first since 2004-05.
The win, coupled with St. Thomas' 3-0 victory at Augsburg, gives SJU (14-7-4, 9-4-3 MIAC) a share of the title and the No. 2 seed in next week's five-team conference playoffs. The Johnnies host the No. 3 seed, Concordia-Moorhead (13-11-1, 10-6-0 MIAC), next Saturday, Feb. 23, at the National Hockey and Events Center in St. Cloud. SJU swept the Cobbers (2-1 and 3-1) earlier this season on Jan. 18-19 in Moorhead.
Senior Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.), playing in the 101st game of his career, gave SJU a 1-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season 12:14 into the first period. Senior Joe Harren (Warroad, Minn.) and sophomore Dave Mylrea (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) tallied the assists.
Brock Raffaele tied the game for BU (7-18, 6-10 MIAC) with a deflection at the 11:38 mark of the second period.
The Johnnies responded by out-shooting the visitors 8-1 and took advantage of the man advantage with a pair of power-play goals in the final 8:22 of the period. Junior Justin Hochsprung (Alexandria, Minn.) gave the lead back to SJU with 2:47 left, his ninth goal of the year. Junior Trent Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) and sophomore Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) were credited with the assists.
Phil Johnson padded the Johnnies' lead with a power-play goal of his own 2:12 later, with assists going to Trent and sophomore Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.). The goal was Johnson's team-leading 12th of the season.
Junior Jason Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) ended the scoring with his seventh goal of the season 5:03 into the third period. Phil Johnson and junior Axel Ramsgard (Gothenburg, Sweden) tallied the assists.
Freshman Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 27 saves to improve to 13-4-1 (9-3-1 MIAC) on the season. He is now 8-1-1 with a 1.08 GAA and a .953 save percentage (224 saves) in his last 10 games between the pipes.
