Penalties Burn SJU in Loss at Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. – Saint Mary's scored three unanswered goals, including two on a five-minute continuous power play in the third period, in a 3-2 win over Saint John's on Saturday, Nov. 23, in Winona.

Sophomore Tyson Fulton (Champlin, Minn.) gave SJU (5-5, 2-2 MIAC) a 1-0 lead 6:38 into the game, with assists going to senior Josh Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.) and junior Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.). Fulton now has a goal in each of his last three games for a total of four on the year.

Freshman Dan McNamara (Grand Rapids, Mich.) made it 2-0 6:52 into the second period, his second goal of the season. Fulton and Gross were credited with the assists.

Bob Marx put SMU (3-5, 1-3 MIAC) on the scoreboard with 9:50 left in the second. The Cardinals spent nearly half of the second period (a total of 9:12) on the power play but did not score.

A five-minute major penalty was called on junior Nick Vatnsdal (Independence, Minn.) for checking from behind with 12:46 remaining and the Cardinals took full advantage of it.

Mike Mezzano tied the game at 2-2 with 10:35 left and Nick Nagel put the home team ahead 22 seconds later. SMU was 0-for-9 on the power play in the game before the major penalty was called.

Sophomore Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 28 saves in the loss for SJU, which was whistled for 14 penalties to the Cardinals' six in the game. SMU ended the game 2-for-14 on the power play, 2-for-19 on the weekend, while SJU was 0-for-5 Saturday.

SMU's Christian Gaffy made 29 saves and denied junior Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) on two separate breakaways, including one with the Johnnies shorthanded.

The loss is the first for SJU at Saint Mary's since Nov. 17, 2007 (3-2).

The Johnnies return to action in two weeks with a home-and-home series against Augsburg, beginning with a 7:05 game Friday, Dec. 6, at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis.
