First-Half Burst Sparks SJU to Season's First Win, 93-83

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's earned its first win of the 2013-14 season with a 93-83 decision over St. Scholastica on Sunday, Nov. 17, at St. Cloud State's Halenbeck Hall.

With the win, SJU head coach Jim Smith broke his tie with Hank Iba, the long-time Oklahoma State head coach (1935-70), for 18th in college basketball history with career win No. 756 (756-536 record in 50 seasons). He is now three victories behind Ed Diddle (Western Kentucky, 1923-64) for 17th with 759 career wins.

The Johnnies (1-1 overall) ended the first half with a 26-5 run in the final 10:24 to build a 51-29 halftime lead. St. Scholastica (0-2 overall) cut SJU's lead to within eight points, 80-72, with six minutes remaining but the Johnnies made five of their last seven shots from the floor to seal the 10-point victory.

Sophomore Alex Schmitt (Chaska, Minn./Waconia) led five Johnnies in double figures with a career-high 22 points off the bench. Classmate Mitchell Kuck (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) followed with 19 points and junior Blake Maslonkowski (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo) added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Jack Wittenborg (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and sophomore Joe Risinger (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) chipped in 10 points apiece for SJU, which shot 58.3 percent (35-for-60) from the field.

The Johnnies converted 18 CSS turnovers into 30 points.

Trevor Morlock led all scorers with 27 points for the Saints, while Jake Naslund added 18. The two combined for an 8-for-16 showing from three-point range.

SJU continues non-conference play with a road trip to Minnesota-Morris at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21.
