COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer strengthened its postseason chances with a 2-0 win over Saint Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Haws Field in Collegeville.

The Johnnies (7-6-3, 5-2-2 MIAC) can clinch an MIAC-playoff berth without playing, thanks to their bye, while the rest of the league squares off Oct. 29. To do that, SJU needs either a loss or tie from Augsburg (at St. Olaf) and St. Thomas (vs. Carleton). The top four teams in the league standings advance to the MIAC Playoffs, which are scheduled to be held Nov. 6 (semifinals) and Nov. 9 (championship match).

Following a scoreless first half, sophomore Alex Niederloh (Maple Grove, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with 16:31 remaining; his second game-winning goal of the season. Junior Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.) took advantage of an SMU turnover near midfield and found Niederloh in the middle of the box.

Freshman Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) ended the scoring with his second goal of the year on a penalty kick with 1:52 left.

Senior Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made one save to earn his milestone 10th win and seventh shutout of his career.

The Cardinals (4-11-1, 1-7-0 MIAC) led in total shots 13-12, but SJU held an 8-2 advantage on goal. Both teams hit the post once and made one team save.

SJU ends the regular season with a 3 p.m. match next Saturday, Nov. 2, at Concordia-Moorhead.
