McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Coe (Iowa) took advantage of four Saint John's errors and scored seven unanswered runs to defeat the Johnnies 7-2 and end their 2012 season on Thursday, May 17, at the NCAA McMinnville (Ore.) Regional.
Freshman Aaron Pfaff (New Ulm, Minn./Cathedral) started the game with a double and junior Max Forster (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) blasted a one-out homer to left, his fifth of the season, to give SJU (29-16) an early 2-0 lead.
Coe (28-16) chipped away with single runs in the first, second and fifth innings before breaking the game open with three in the bottom of the seventh and an unearned run, its third of the game, in the eighth.
Junior Ryan Spengler (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) fell to 6-4 on the year, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits. He walked four and struck out three in 6.1 innings. Juniors Scott Schroeder (Richmond, Minn./Rocori) and Connor Cline (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) combined for 1.2 innings of relief. Cline allowed an unearned run with two walks.
SJU put together a two-out threat in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Dylan Graves (Mora, Minn.) singled to deep left and was held at third on a double from classmate Josh Groth (Fridley, Minn.). Coe's Connor Alberhasky, however, got sophomore Luke Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) to pop out to end the inning. A.J. Reuter entered in the seventh and retired all nine Johnnies he faced, in order, to end the game.
SJU's top five hitters in the lineup tallied a hit each, though Nos. 6-9 combined to go 0-for-13 on the day. The Johnnies went 1-2-3 at the plate in six of the game's nine innings.
Notes: The Johnnies committed seven errors in 16 innings in the field during the NCAA Regional…the pitching staff walked 10, hit three batters and threw four wild pitches…Coe entered the contest averaging 3.44 walks and 5.03 strikeouts per nine innings pitched, as well as a 4.07 ERA and a .280 opponent batting average, but struck out six Johnnies and walked none in the victory.
