The Johnnies travel to face Macalester this Wednesday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Leonard Center in St. Paul. – Listen Live (WBHR-660 AM) | Live Stats/Live Video

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Gustavus Adolphus shot 57.1 percent in the second half to turn a three-point halftime lead into a 58-40 win at Saint John's Feb. 13 in Collegeville. The Johnnies (13-10, 9-9 MIAC), meanwhile, shot just 23.8 percent (5-for-21) in the second half to drop their third straight game. The 40 points scored is the smallest total since Jan. 18, 1997 (45-40 loss at St. Thomas), and the least amount scored at home in 48 seasons under the direction of head coach Jim Smith (48-41 loss vs. St. Thomas on Dec. 3, 1994). The two teams played fairly even basketball in the first half despite SJU's 0-for-6 showing at the free-throw line. The second half was a different story, however, as the Johnnies committed four turnovers during a stretch in which they made only two of their first 13 shots after intermission. The dry spell equated to just eight points, thanks to a pair of layups and four free throws, in 14:12 of play. Sophomore Patrick Butcher (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) led the Johnnies with 10 points off the bench before fouling out with 2:08 left to play. Sophomore Seth Marx (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) and senior Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) followed with nine and eight points, respectively. Junior James Hill led the Gusties with 19 points off the bench, while seniors Paul Blacklock and Tyler Grey added 12 points apiece. Blacklock collected 11 rebounds and four blocks, and Grey was 4-for-5 from three-point range. GAC's Seth Anderson, the MIAC's leading scorer at 23.1 points per game, was held scoreless after a 0-for-6 showing from the floor in 17 minutes of play. SJU is now just 33 of 96 (34.4 percent) from the field, including 10-for-38 (26.3 percent) from behind the arc, and 11 of 27 (40.7 percent) from the charity stripe in its last two games.

RECORD BOOK UPDATES: Senior Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) needs one point to pass Corey Jackson (32nd, 1992-96), six to pass Nate Guetter (31st, 1995-99) and 13 to move past Kipp Christianson (1993-97) for 30th on the school's all-time scoring list. He is currently third in school history with 364 career assists and needs four to pass assistant coach Matt Ohme (2003-07) for second. Burns is also fourth with 152 career three-pointers and eighth with 121 career steals. He needs two steals to pass another assistant coach, Pat McKenzie (2000-04), for seventh.

PLAYOFF RACE: Hamline has a good chance of reaching 11 wins with games remaining against Saint Mary's and Macalester this week. In this scenario, SJU needs to win its remaining games to earn an MIAC Playoff berth. The Johnnies own the tie-breaker over the Pipers thanks to their series sweep this season. Bethel, meanwhile, holds the tie-breaker over SJU as long as Gustavus finishes ahead of St. Thomas in the conference standings. The Royals end the regular season against St. Thomas and Gustavus. In the case of a three-way tie with Bethel and Hamline, SJU would advance with its 3-1 record against the two teams (as would Bethel with its 2-2 record against Hamline and SJU, while Hamline is 1-3 and would be out).

A LOOK AT THE SCOTS: Macalester enters Wednesday's game riding a 13-game losing streak since topping Carleton 61-59 on Jan. 2. Gustavus jumped out to an 11-2 advantage en route to a 68-52 victory over Mac on Feb. 11. Macalester crashed the offensive glass for a 16-9 advantage, but could not overcome a 51-percent Gustavus shooting performance on the day. Bert Yaffe sparked the Scots with 14 points, thanks to a 4-for-4 performance from three-point range, and six rebounds off the bench. Pierce Peters added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Sam Marshall collected 10 points and nine boards.

EARLIER THIS SEASON: Saint John's snapped a two-game skid with a 68-50 win over Macalester earlier this season on Jan. 16 in Collegeville. The two teams combined for a cool 32.7 percent (18-for-55) from the floor in the first half but combined for a 58.5-percent (30-for-51) performance in the second. The Scots doubled their first-half shooting percentage (28.0 percent) in the second half (58.3 percent) but could not keep up with the Johnnies' 59.3-percent showing and 17-8 advantage on the glass in the game's final 20 minutes. Barmore led the Johnnies with a career-high 27 points and added five rebounds. Burns and junior Chris Neumann (Winsted, Minn./Holy Trinity) collected 12 points apiece. Neumann missed his first career double-double by one rebound and added a career-high six assists. Sam Marshall posted a double-double for the Scots with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The two teams combined for a .250 three-point percentage (6-for-24) in the game. The Johnnies were 11 of 13 from the free-throw line to improve to 82.3 percent (107-for-130) at the line in the last six games.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 68-28 all-time against Macalester under the direction of Smith, including a 31-17 record in St. Paul. SJU has won each of the last five meetings on the Macalester campus, which snapped a five-game losing streak from 2001-05.
